Halstead Road Planning Proposal

The Planning Proposal P/10/0501/2 put in by Jelsons to build over 300 houses on the land off Halstead Road has been refused by Charnwood Borough Council. Many local residents objected as did the CPRE, Lafarge and the Mountsorrel Railway Trust. The Parish Council objected and put in a well argued submission drafted by a local Planning Consultant. The land forms part of an Area of Particularly Attractive Countryside, adjoins several nature reserves and is very near the important aggregate quarry at Buddon Wood. The additional housing would have overloaded all the school, health and social facilities in the village and created extra traffic. This is of course only the first round of the battle and the developers could well go to appeal but the strong opposition of many people and organisations in the village has shown that we can fight off these opportunistic, badly-planned developments in our countryside. Follow the link to Charnwod Planning.

New Play Equipment at Halstead Road Playing Fields

Mountsorrel Parish Council has kept to its promise to update all three  of the village's Play Areas. The old play area on the Halstead Road Playing Fields has been revamped with new equipment including  toddler swings and a multi play unit with towers and slides. Most of the cost of the new equipment was paid by the Parish Council but a Shire grant from Leicestershire County Council for £9548 helped to cover the cost. There are still one or two problems with the landscaping around the periphery of the site and restoring the grass on the tractor track but we are working to get these completed. The other two play areas on the Memorial Playing Fields and on Loughborough Road have been updated in previous years.

Bus Timetables

A new Transport page has been added to the Directory giving details of the buses that run through the village. It also covers links to Coach and Train services and getting to East Midlands Airport.

Mountsorrel Youth Cafe

A group of villagers has formed a charity to promote a local Youth Cafe and have chosen the former Maltby Insurance Offices as a likely site. They held an Open Day at the fete but a date for the Cafe opening has yet to be decided. For more information visit their website on www.sycafe.org.

New Memorial Hall

Revised plans for the New Memorial Hall have been approved by Charnwood Borough Council. There have been some slight amendments to the original plans that went on display in the Village, with the Youth Centre and the new Hall being combined into one building, which will be moved slightly further north, away from the apartments on the south side of the Hall. The new building will be built by the Mountsorrel War Memorials Trust Ltd on the site of the existing Memorial Hall, which will be demolished. Further details can be found on Charnwood's website www.charnwood.gov.uk.
